If you live on the New York side of Lake Champlain, you already know the rhythm. Weekends fill themselves. It's the weeknights that reward planning, and Westport's summer of 2026 has more free professional programming packed into a walkable village than most towns three times its size. Here is what is actually happening between now and Labor Day, with the dates you need on the fridge.
The claim, up front
Westport is not a town of amateur-hour lawn concerts. Ballard Park's summer series draws artists from LA and Nashville. The Depot Theatre pulls most of its cast off the Amtrak from Penn Station. And a fifteen-minute walk from either can get you to a marina restaurant serving lobster rolls to boaters who tied up ten feet from their table. Once you see the pieces on one map, the summer looks different.
The 2026 Ballard Park Music Series kicks off on July 9 with Myra Flynn. Other highlights include an annual performance from the Meadowmount School of Music which honors Anne "Petey" Ballard Cerf's founding of Ballard Park, and the largest ensemble that the park has ever accommodated: the Adirondack Jazz Orchestra, which will include 19 musicians.
Nineteen musicians on the pavilion at the bottom of the hill is not a small booking. For context, the same park in winter is a flooded skating rink with a warming hut. That is the range of a single acre of grass in Westport.
Thursday nights, July 9 through August 13
Ballard Park's concerts are free, start at 7:00 p.m., and are staged in the pavilion at the base of the lawn with Lake Champlain behind the band. Bring a blanket or a low chair. Food for purchase from Winton's 1898 Tavern is served from the park's Warming Hut at the corner of Main Street and Washington Street.

A note on Meadowmount that most park regulars never register: the Meadowmount School of Music is a renowned summer program for violinists, violists, and cellists, ages 10 to 30, from around the world, located on a 240-acre campus in Westport, and the school's alumni include Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Jaime Laredo, Jessie Montgomery, and many more. The teenagers playing Haydn on the hillside on July 30 are training in the same rooms those players trained in. That is not typical municipal programming.
House of Hamill is worth flagging too. Their original song "Banks of the Brandywine" was a Grand Prize winner in the 2024 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and the video for their all-violin cover of "Sweet Child O' Mine" amassed over 16 million views on Facebook, where it was shared over 400,000 times.
If a rainy Thursday scrubs a show, watch the park's channels for a venue swap. Portside Restaurant at the Westport Marina also books music every Saturday night from June through September, so a rained-out Thursday can pivot two days later.
What changed in the park itself
If you have not walked Ballard in a year, the ground under your feet is different. The Ballard Park Foundation replaced sections of pathway with Porous Pave and swapped the picnic tables and benches for polywood. Foundation president Debbie Pastore has explained that the older population and mobility issues moving through the park and getting over the uneven ground drove the change, along with a problem with benches and tables being damaged from getting moved for mowing, so they've moved to a standard polywood material that's more durable so they can stay out all winter, and the bump-outs also give the ability to leave them in place and preserve them. Translation for concertgoers: your grandmother can actually get from the parking area to a table this year, and the seating no longer disappears at Labor Day.
The Depot Theatre: your Amtrak-fed Equity house
Two blocks from the park, in a working 1876 train station, is something almost no small town in America has. The Depot Theatre stands proudly as the only professional Actors' Equity Association and Stage Directors and Choreographers Society affiliated theater company in the six-million-acre Adirondack Park.

In 2026, the beloved Intermezzo tradition returns reimagined as the Dark Night Series: seven performances, seven evenings, one historic train station. That means the nights between Main Stage shows now have their own programming instead of a dark house.
Two things residents should know that visitors do not. First, the trains still run through the building during performances. When the trains go by, people cheer, and if it's a musical, they stop or sometimes just incorporate it into the script and ad lib a little. It really is part of the DNA of the theater. Second, the cast on stage did not drive up from Albany. Executive Director Sarah Wilson estimates 80 percent of their cast takes Amtrak from New York City, and the other 20 percent has come from all over the country, including cast members from Buffalo, Chicago, New Orleans and the Pacific Northwest.
Season Pass Package sales began March 16, 2026, and Single Ticket sales began April 16, 2026 for the 2026 Season. Weekend performances of Ring of Fire in particular tend to close out before locals think to book.
The fair that predates the Civil War
Block off the last week of July. The 2026 Essex County Fair is a five-day celebration happening July 29 through August 2, 2026, at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport, New York. This is the 177th Essex County Fair.
Two things that raise it above the small-fair category. First, the scale relative to the town: the Essex County Fair provides a significant boost to the local economy, attracting approximately 10,000 people each year. Westport's year-round population is well under that. If your driveway feels busier the last week of July, that is why. Second, the historical footprint is genuine. The fair traces its origins back to 1848 when Elkanah Watson organized the inaugural Essex County-Clinton County Fair, and the current grounds were established between 1885 and 1889 by the Essex County Agricultural Society.
Amusements of America will be joining the Essex County Fair in 2026. If you were disappointed by the midway a few years back, this is the change worth noting.
Where to eat before or after any of this
The Ticonderoga-to-Chesterfield stretch of shoreline is dense with marina restaurants. A short list residents actually use:
- Portside Restaurant, Westport Marina. Named after Lake Champlain's mythical lake monster, Champ's Taverne (Upper Deck Restaurant) is a laid-back gem tucked inside the Safe Harbour Marina, a go-to spot for lakeside lunches and relaxed vibes, perfect for travelers headed out on the water looking for a place to stop and grab a bite to eat.
- Winton's 1898 Tavern, near the golf course. Also the concert-night food vendor at Ballard Park.
- The Essex Food Hub, up the road in Essex, a community hub inspired by the region's local makers, farmers and food artisans.
- The Mill ADK in Westport for daytime workshops and creative programming between meals.
For a boat-in dinner, the Portside and Upper Deck decks are the two obvious plays. For a walking night around a Ballard Park concert, Winton's is the shortest line.
Weekend built for out-of-town guests
If your in-laws or the friends from Boston are coming up any Thursday in July, here is a plan you can execute without a car: coffee and a bagel in the morning, an afternoon swim at the Ballard Park beach, an early dinner on the Portside deck, then walk five minutes back to the park for a 7:00 concert. Add a Depot Theatre matinee the next day and you have shown them the Lake Champlain that residents actually live in, not a brochure version of it.
